Wage Reporting and Overpayment Monitoring
Each year, about 1 million people receive an overpayment notice from the Social Security Administration (SSA) saying they received more than they should, and it needs to be paid back. On average these overpayments amount to $9,282. Once an overpayment is identified, you must pay back 10% of the overpayment amount.
The best way to prevent overpayments is to report your earnings to SSA by the 5th of each month and pay attention to earning restrictions such as Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA).
